Musician, underwear designer and now a TV host, over-achiever Michal Nicolas makes the Energizer Bunny look lazy.

DNA: Why did you want to be a pop star?
Michal Nicolas: My motivation these days is different to when I first set out for a career in music as a kid. Back then I absolutely wanted to be a pop star. I loved George Michael and Madonna and wanted to be just like them. Today it’s a different story. I prefer to be an artist who gets to make the music he wants to, without worrying about being a commercial product.

How did you get into the industry?
The hard way! I went to the Australian Theatre For Young People while still at school and thought I wanted to be an actor. But when I realised I could write songs, music became my passion. I started out in several disastrous boy bands. I finally made the decision to go solo, put every cent I had into a demo and started knocking on record company doors. I was lucky because soon after that I got my first record deal.
